Why aren't there more design apprenticeships?

Why aren't there more design apprenticeships?

28 February 2014

As part of National Apprenticeships Week we’re holding a summit aimed at improving the number and quality of design apprenticeships in the UK.

Today at our offices in Angel, we'll be bringing together employers, education providers, young designers and industry organisations for the Design Apprenticeship Summit. Our intention is to kickstart an action plan to create more design apprenticeships to benefit young designers and the industry as a whole. Speakers include Wayne Hemingway MBE, (who himself employs design apprentices) and the man behind the Tech City apprenticeship scheme, Ian Ashman, principal of Hackney Community College.

Despite design apprenticeships being offered by a handful of colleges around the country, they are far from well-known in the industry. Now is the perfect time to look again at entry routes into the design industry and the role that apprenticeships are playing.
