HOW WE USE YOUR DATA

We are committed to protecting your privacy.  It is important that you understand how we look after your personal data in accordance with data protection legislation.  This privacy policy outlines how the Design Council will use, store and share your personal data and supplements any other fair processing or privacy notices provided to you from time to time.

WHO ARE WE?

In this privacy policy, the terms "we", "our", and "us" are used to refer to Design Council (registered charity number is 272099) whose registered address is at Design Council, c/o Sayer Vincent, Invicta House, 108-114 Golden Lane, London EC1Y 0TL.

We are a controller of your data which means that we are responsible for looking after it.  We will use your personal data fairly, lawfully and in a transparent manner, and in accordance with the Data Protection Laws. This website is not intended for children, and we do not knowingly collect data relating to children.

WHAT IS PERSONAL DATA?

Personal data is any information that tells us, or may tell us, something about you. This could include information such as your name, contact details, date of birth and bank account details.

WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT ABOUT YOU?

We may collect the following personal data categories about you:

  • Personal Contact Data such as name, title, telephone number and address (including billing address and email addresses).
  • Financial Data such as bank account and payment card details.
  • Miscellaneous Personal Data which may include nationality, job title and workplace.
  • Technical Data such as your internet protocol (IP) address and your time zone and location.
  • Usage Data such as information on how you interact with and use our website.

This data is only collected when it is needed for a clear purpose, as described below (see section 8).

In certain circumstances, our collection of the different categories of data set out above may include the collection of Special Categories of Personal Data about you (this includes details about your race or ethnicity, religious or philosophical beliefs, sex life, sexual orientation, political opinions, trade union membership, information about your health, and genetic and biometric data). For example, we may collect information about your ethnicity where relevant for determining whether we are meeting our targets in reaching a diverse range of individuals with our services.

WHERE DO WE GET THIS PERSONAL DATA FROM?

Your interactions with us: We collect your personal data directly from you by post, phone, email or otherwise, such as by filling any forms on our website or if you have a query in relation to a ticket you have purchased for an event we are organising.

Our interactions with relevant third parties: We may also collect your personal data through relevant third parties such as:

  • Technical Data from analytics providers such as Google, Adwords and Meta.   
  • Financial Data from payment service providers such as Stripe.
  • Personal Contact Data and Financial Data from Organisations we collaborate with to organise ticketed events such as Vfairs, Stitch and the World Design Organisation.

Automated technologies or interactions: As you interact with our website, we will automatically collect Technical Data and Usage Data about your browsing actions and patterns. MARKETING

You will receive marketing communications from us if you have requested information from us and have not opted out of receiving the marketing. You can ask to stop sending you marketing communications at any time by emailing us at info@designcouncil.org.uk or clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of our marketing emails.

CHANGE OF PURPOSE

We will only use your personal data for the purposes for which we collected it, unless we reasonably consider that we need to use it for another reason and that reason is compatible with the original purpose. If you wish to get an explanation as to how the processing for the new purpose is compatible with the original purpose, please contact us.

If we need to use your personal data for an unrelated purpose, we will notify you and we will explain the legal basis which allows us to do so.

Please note that we may process your personal data without your knowledge or consent, in compliance with the above rules, where this is required or permitted by law.

WHO DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL DATA WITH?

We may share your personal data where necessary with vFairs LLC and the World Design Organisation for the purposes set out in section 8 above, and primarily in relation to supporting with managing and facilitating ticketed events we organise that you may attend.

HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR PERSONAL DATA FOR?

We will only retain your personal data for as long as it is needed for the relevant purpose of processing. Once such period expires, we will securely and permanently delete your data unless we have statutory obligations to keep personal data for a longer period or where we may need your personal data for a longer period in case of a legal claim.

WHEN DO WE TRANSFER YOUR PERSONAL DATA OVERSEAS?

We may transfer your personal data to service providers that carry out certain functions on our behalf. This may involve transferring personal data outside the UK to countries which have laws that do not provide the same level of data protection as the UK law.

Whenever we transfer your personal data out of the UK to service providers, we ensure a similar degree of protection is afforded to it by ensuring that specific standard contractual terms approved for use in the UK which give the transferred personal data the same protection as it has in the UK. We may also transfer your personal data to countries that have been deemed by the UK to provide an adequate level of protection for personal data, namely sharing your personal data to the World Design Organisation based in Canada.

WHAT RIGHTS DO YOU HAVE?

In some instances, we may be unable to carry out your request, in which case we will write to you to explain why.

Your right of access

You have the right to request confirmation that your personal data is being processed and access to your personal data (through us providing a copy).

Your right to rectification

You have the right to request that we rectify your personal data if it is not accurate or not complete.

Your right to erasure

You have the right to ask us to erase or delete your personal data where there is no reason for us to continue to process your personal data or there is no compelling ground for us to continue to use our legitimate interests as the legal basis for processing. This right can also be exercised if the personal data has been processed unlawfully (i.e. in breach of data protection legislation) or if it is necessary to delete the personal data to comply with a legal obligation. 

Your right to restriction of processing

You have the right to ask us to restrict or block the processing of your personal data that we hold about you where you consider that: the personal data is inaccurate; our processing of your personal data is unlawful; where we no longer need the personal data but you require us to keep it to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim; or where you have raised an objection to our use of your personal data.

Your right to port your personal data

You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in a commonly used electronic format

Your right to object

You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data where we are relying on legitimate interests or exercise of a public interest task to make the processing lawful. If you raise an objection we will carry out an assessment to determine whether we have an overriding legitimate ground which entitles us to continue to process your personal data

Automated decisions

You have the right to not be subject to automated decisions which produce legal effects or which could have a similarly significant effect on you, except in limited circumstances. We do not take automated decisions about you using your personal data or use profiling in relation to you.
