Call for ideas: redesign Wimbledon town centre for 2030

What do you think Wimbledon town centre should look like in 2030?

Design Council in collaboration with Merton Council and Love Wimbledon BID are launching FutureWimbledon, a open competition to envisage what Wimbledon town centre could look like in the next 15 years and contribute to a masterplan that will shape the town’s future.

The potential

With the potential arrival of Crossrail 2, this could mean a commute from Wimbledon to London’s West End could take just 12 minutes, encouraging more people to choose to live and work there. Ideas should focus around the area of Wimbledon station and show a balance for the community, the place, the people and local businesses. What would make it a fantastic place to live and work?

Wimbledon town centre today

If you want to tackle some of the more difficult issues, these include: traffic management, urban living, environmental sustainability and quality of life (but we are sure you could add many more to this list).

Two entry categories

Rising stars

Open to individuals who are: soon to be qualified or qualified professionals in the disciplines: urban design, town planning, architecture, landscape design, built environment consultancy.

First prize: £3,000 honorarium.

Other prizes: A further £2,000 to be distributed at the discretion of the judging panels.

The organisers will look to appoint the winner for a minimum of 18 months as a Design Champion to advise on design matters and support the masterplanning process.

Creative communities

Open to creative thinkers globally. This can be both an individual or group entry, without the requirement of any professional qualifications.

Prize: £2,000 to be divided between the different winners at the discretion of the judging panels, with the minimum award of £1,000 to one community organisation.

How to enter

Your submission can take the form of any format you want, whether it is a poem, song, abstract sketch or scale plans and 3D animations. Download the brief here. Please note all competition rules and terms and conditions are listed within the brief.

8 October 2014 – Winners announced at Design Talk, part of Wimbledon Bookfest
