Carly is an independent Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). She specialises in high-quality sustainable planning and design informed by landscape and environmental assessment and has done so for over 40 years.

Carly has been responsible for the design and management of projects in the UK and abroad, working with architects including Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, and Terry Farrell on schemes which have won awards and competitions, many based on fully sustainable/regenerative solutions. She was instrumental in promoting the ‘landscape-led and iterative’ approach to planning and development now widely adopted. She advises and acts for governments, LPAs, National Park/Landscape partnerships, commercial clients, organisations, communities, and individuals. She acts as an expert witness at inquiries, sits on design panels, produces landscape/planning design guidance documents, and provides bespoke landscape and visual assessment training. She is a member of Natural England LI and other groups working to influence national policy and judges awards and competitions for the LI. Much of Carly’s work is in neighbourhood planning, helping people develop a more in-depth understanding of landscape and its value.

In the 1980s, she introduced Environmental Colour Assessment to the UK: today ECA is used by architects and designers and in planning/design guidance. She is also the author of the novel "Black Dog Sunday."
