John Lyall
John Lyall is an award-winning architect based in the UK who leads the design practice of LyallBills & Young. His work ranges from transport projects such as rail stations at Tottenham Hale and North Greenwich (shortlisted for the Stirling Prize) to cultural and education buildings such as the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich and the Goldsmiths Centre in Clerkenwell. He also has a reputation for conceiving successful urban regeneration projects in conservation areas and cities such as Leeds, Cardiff Bay, and currently Chatham, Kent. In the past 15 years, he has achieved acclaim for a series of water industry buildings on London’s Olympic Park and on the Thames at Crossness.
Overseas projects have included landmark schemes in Omaha, Nebraska, in Taos, New Mexico, Germany, and France. Before setting up practice in the 1980s with Will Alsop, John worked for Cedric Price and Piano + Rogers.
He has over 30 years’ experience leading design review panels from Cardiff Bay to CABE, the London Olympics, and 5 years chairing the Highways UK panel. In recent years, he has mainly chaired reviews of large infrastructure projects for Water companies, Highways, and Rail.
John Lyall has taught architecture and lectured about his design work across the world and is currently a professional examiner for 4 universities in the UK. A monograph book about his work “John Lyall: Contexts and Catalysts” was published in 2000.
He is based in Suffolk with a busy office in London’s Soho.
