Julia Ratcliffe

Julia is a Structural Engineer. Over the last three decades, she has worked in consultancy on the structural design of new buildings, refurbishments, and masterplans: from cultural centres to towers, bridges, and residential developments in the UK and internationally, as well as advising on low carbon off-site solutions and for international development organisations.

She founded Scale Consulting in 2018. Previously, she was a Director of Expedition Engineering in London and also worked for Buro Happold in the UK and New York. Julia has served as a Trustee of Architecture for Humanity UK, supported post-disaster reconstruction in the field, and is a founding member and currently co-chair of the Institution of Structural Engineer’s Humanitarian and International Development panel. Part of the Design Council’s Expert Network since 2015, she is also on the Quality Review Panels for the London Boroughs of Havering and Hackney. She has served on judging panels for the IStructE, RIBA London, and Structural Steel Design awards. She is a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, a Professional Engineer licensed in the State of Connecticut, USA, and was awarded Honorary Fellowship of RIBA in 2022.
