Martin Stockley
Martin has worked for over 50 years in built environment design across a wide range of engineering disciplines. After his early career at the Greater London Council and Thames Water, he was a Partner at Alan Baxter & Associates for ten years before founding his own practice based in Manchester and London. As one of the pioneers, he developed the engineering approach to public realm design, which led to the publication of "Manual for Streets."
He was deeply involved in the successful regeneration of Manchester from the early 1990s and maintains good contacts with the city. In 2013, he handed his practice to his co-Directors (who continue to practice as Civic Engineers) and lived and worked in Moscow for the State Development Company, a local developer, establishing and leading their design quality team. On return from Moscow in late 2016, he has continued to provide design advice, in particular on HS2, where he was a Vice Chair of the Independent Design Panel for 5 years and remains a panel member.
He has latterly gained significant expertise in self-build sustainable construction through the development of a new family home in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Outside of work, Martin has maintained a very active involvement in sports. From his junior county-level swimming, water polo, and basketball, he has coached an elite sprint swimmer. He walks, runs, cycles, swims, skis, paddle boards, boulders, and remains open to new pursuits.
