Paul Appleby

Paul Appleby advises on the integrated sustainable design of buildings and communities. He has worked in the construction industry as a consultant, lecturer, and researcher for more than 55 years, working on award-winning projects with some of the world's leading architects such as Renzo Piano, Rafael Vinoly, Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, Terry Farrell, Nicholas Grimshaw, Herzog de Meuron, Ralph Erskine, and Will Alsop on high profile projects globally, including Battersea Power Station, the Tate Modern extension, and Greenwich Millennium Village.

More recently, he has provided advice to Ashford Borough Council and Ebbsfleet Development Corporation on Energy Strategy and BREEAM, including achieving carbon neutrality for an off-grid home. He is a Design Panel member for Design South East, Frame Projects, and previously HS2, and has been involved in Design Reviews for more than 150 projects seeking planning approval. He is a member of local panels for Oxford, St Albans, Hemel Garden Communities, and Ebbsfleet Garden City, and was a member of the HS2 Design Review Panel for 5 years. He has provided mentoring to local authorities in developing design codes under the Government’s Pathfinder Scheme and for the UDL Code School.

He has produced some 70 publications, including key guidance published by CIBSE and a highly regarded book: Integrated Sustainable Design of Buildings.
