Veronika Kapsali
Dr. Veronika Kapsali is a Professor of Materials Technology and Design at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London (UAL). With over 10 years of experience, she was awarded Innovator of the Year in 2014 for her groundbreaking work in active fibers and textiles. Veronika has secured over £1 million in funding from public sources such as UKRI/AHRC, Innovate UK, and H2020, as well as private investors. She is the founder of the Active Materials Lab, where she conducts pioneering research at the intersection of biology, material science, and design. Veronika’s work bridges the gap between creative design and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) practice by exploring how structural principles from biological materials can enhance designers’ skills and knowledge of sustainable design.
In addition to her academic achievements, Veronika holds several granted patents and authored “Biomimetics for Designers,” a key text in design curriculum on an international scale. She is also actively involved in public outreach activities, including the Royal Institution, Edinburgh Science Festival, and a series of educational films on biomimetic design commissioned by BBC Learning. Veronika’s multidisciplinary approach not only shapes the next generation of designers but also contributes to a broader understanding of how design can play a crucial role in building a sustainable future.
